The Alishan area is well-known both for its scenery and tea making, and the high mountain tea grown there represents Taiwan. High altitude brings a cold climate and large temperature differences between the day and night. This climate slows the growth of tea trees that and irrigation from mountain springs produce tea leaves that are thick and tender, and stems that are soft. Alishan oolong tea and jinxuan tea are fragrant, rich, and lingering in terms of smell and taste. Their superior quality helps them win championships regularly in national tea competitions, earning them the international reputation of being “the best teas in Taiwan.” The landscape of the southern region features a large tract of tea gardens spread over hills between the villages.
THE TOUR
Day 1: Eryanping Mountain Trail → Organic vegetable meal → Miyang River Trail in Leye → Taiwan champion coffee tasting → DIY of freshly hand-made rice cakes dipped in oolong tea flour, wild fig jelly, granny’s cudweed cakes, and tea-leaf eggs → Tea making experience → Alpine dinner → Moonlit tea party and Tsou concert → Overnight at Shizhuo B & B
Eryanping Mountain: The Eryanping Mountain Trail is one of the highlights of a visit to Siding, the tea-and-vegetable-growing village between Chukou and Shihjhou on the main road to Alishan. The trail features bamboo groves, the Immortals Well Waterfall, and - if the weather is cooperating - views in one direction of Taiwan's tallest mountain, Yushan, and in the other, the lowland reservoirs of Lantan and Renyitan.
Tsou: The Tsou are an Indigenous people of central southern Taiwan. They are spread across three administrative entities of the Republic of China — Nantou County, Chiayi County and Kaohsiung City. They are sometimes confused with the Thao people of Sun Moon Lake. In the year 2000 the Tsou numbered 6,169. This was approximately 1.6% of Taiwan's total Indigenous population, making them the seventh-largest tribal group.
Day 2:Morning walk along forest trail → Fenqihu old streets → Tea meal and tea (oolong, jinxuan) → Souvenir shopping → Hotel in Taipei
Notes:
1. The tea party, tea making tour, DIY activities and attractions are by prior appointment only.
2. Warm clothing and rain gear are recommended due to the unstable weather in the mountainous area.
