2015 Taiwan Orchid Show & Japan Cherry Blossom 19 Days Tour (7MAR)

Day 1 - Departure from Sydney / Arrive Taiwan
7Mar2015 (Sat): -Depart flight from Sydney ( CI52 22:10) to Taiwan.  

Day 2 - Arrive Taiwan / Taipei City Sightseeing / Yangmingshan / Shihlin Night Market (L)  
8Mar2015 (Sun): - On arrival into Taipei International Airport at approx 4:30AM in the morning, you will be met by your friendly Taiwan Holidays & Travels tour guide who will greet and transfer you to Taipei City. Sightseeing for today including Presidential Building (Pass by), Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall, National Palace Museum and Martyrs’ Shrine, and Yangmingshan National Park.  After breakfast, you will be taken to Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall, a landmark of Taipei City. The CKS Memorial Hall is the attraction most visited by foreign tourists. Outside the gate of CKS Memorial Hall, there are poles carrying the sign of true rightness. The four sides of the architecture structure are similar to those of the pyramids in Egypt. The material is white marble. The roofs are decorated with deep blue glass as part of the reflection of blue sky and bright sun. There are also places for international art performances. They are National Theater and National Concert Hall. The National Palace Museum houses the world’s largest collection of priceless Chinese art treasures, one which spans China’s nearly 5,000 year history. Most of the museum’s 620,000 art objects were part of the Chinese imperial collection, which began over 1,000 years ago in the early Song dynasty. In the afternoon, we will visit Martyrs' Shrine, a classic Ming Dynasty architecture. You might have the opportunity to see the colorful ceremony of the changing of the guards at the entrance. Lunch will be held at the famous Five Dime Driftwood House. After lunch, we will depart for Yangmingshan National Park. The magnificent mountainous scenery and comfortable weather have made Yangmingshan a perfect summer resort. Yangmingshan features cherry blossom in Spring. Total area of the park is 125 hectares, designed in traditional Chinese style. The natural beauty of the part has won it the reputation as urban forest and the Taipei garden. Later this afternoon, you will be treated by the famous Taiwanese foot massage. Tonight you will visit the largest night market in Taiwan, "Shihlin Night Market". In the night market, you will be able to explore and see all sorts of bargains. In the evening, tour guide will advise whether you are able to join the Lantern Festival events in Taipei city.

Day 3 - Taipei / Wulai / Chiufen / Yehliu / Pingxi (B/L/D)

9Mar2015 (Mon): After breakfast, we will depart for Wulai, a famous mountain village in northern Taiwan and is located in water reservation area. Residents are most aboriginal people (Atayal Tribe). The place is famous for hot springs, trail train, and waterfalls. A distinctive feature of Wulai is the wide variety of cherry trees. During February to April, various cherry trees blossom along the winding mountain roads, valleys and rivers. There is a cable cart to have panoramic view of the valley. The "Wulai Old Street" will be visited, where you can taste the many famous Taiwanese gourmet and snacks. Next stop will be Chiufen Village, used to be the center of gold mining. Several movies were shot here and won international acknowledgement, i.e. the Sad City has won first prize in Venice Film Festival and awakened people’s memory of Chiufen. There are many unique teahouses in Chiufen. These teahouses are best stops during visit to this mountain village. Lunch will be held at Chiufen traditional restaurant. After Lunch you will be taken to Yehliu Ocean Park. Because the rock layer of seashore contains sandstone of limestone texture and it is subject to sea erosion, weathering and earth movements, there is particular scenery consisting of sea trenches / holes, candle shaped rocks, and pot shaped rocks. You will see the famous spectacular rock formations “Queen’s Head” and “Fairy’s Shoe”. Tonight you will be taken to Pingxi to light up the sky lanterns. Sky lanterns are made with rice paper and thin bamboo strips. You can pen your hopes on the bulbous-shaped paper creation and watched it drift off in the clear sky. Dinner will be held at the Taipei 101 Building. We will then visit Taipei 101 building (Observatory Deck included), the world’s 2nd tallest building.

Day 4 - Taipei / Taroko Gorge / Hualien (B/L/D)

10Mar2015 (Tue): After breakfast, we will visit Orchid Garden in YiLan, where more than 1.3 millions of orchids are located. On our way to Taroko Gorge, we will drive pass the "Chingshuei Cliff" located on the section of the Suao-Hualien Highway that stretches between Heping and Chongde stations, is one of the most spectacular sights on Taiwan's Pacific coast. The Cliff is more than 1,000 meters high and drops almost vertically into the sea. The highway snakes along its curving face more than 20 kilometers, with the sheer cliff rising on one side and a sheer drop to the ocean on the other. Then visit Taroko Gorge, which is the “Seven Wonder of Asia". Taroko is famous for its spectacular mountains and marble canyons. Cliffs and canyons stretch along Liwu River. Four million years ago, the island of Taiwan was formed by the collision of plates. After millions of years of wind erosion, the marble rocks were exposed and cut by Liwu River, creating impressive grand canyons. The waterfalls characterized Taroko National Park. Swallow Grotto (Yanzikou) and Tunnel of Nine Turns (Jiuqudong) are the most impressive natural scenes in Taroko. The Taroko Monumental is designed in Chinese style and Eternal Spring Shrine (Changchun Temple) is to remember those who sacrificed their lives for building the central highway.  Dinner will be held at a steakhouse in Hualien. Overnight stay at Hualien City.

Day 5 - Hualien / Taitung (B/L/D)
11Mar2015 (Wed): - After breakfast at the hotel, we will depart to visit indigenous Amei Culture Centre and GuangFu Sugar Factory. Lunch will be held at Butterfly Valley. Butterfly Valley is abundance with beautiful landscape and natural environment. It's just the perfect essence to renowned butterfly sceneries. Here you can enjoy a unique natural experience and amazing comfortable sensation outdoor hot spring and spa in the deluxe butterfly Valley Resort. Luyeh Gao Tai: located at the long and narrow rift at the junction of the Central Range and Coastal Range. This famous sky diving practice hub in Taiwan is a perfect place for sky diving and hot air balloon activities, attracting a lot of sky divers to come and enjoy gliding with the wind. Luyeh Tableland enjoys wonderful scenery overseeing the rivers and green land of the rift valley. Later in the afternoon we will go to "Tainan Aboriginal Beinan Cultural Village"; it is the site where the BC civil human evidences have been found. Beinan Cultural relic is the sarcophagus and remnants excavated during the railroad project. It is the biggest and most intact prehistoric habitation of Taiwan. It belongs to the first class of ancient remains. The collections are now exhibited at Beinan Cultural Park for public viewing. Overnight at Taitung and enjoy a relaxing hot spring bath at the 5 star hotel.

Day 6 - Taitung / Kenting / Kaohsiung (B/L)
12Mar2015 (Thu): - After breakfast, We will drive to Kenting via the Scenic Southern Link Highway. Kenting National Park, undoubtedly, is one of the most beautifully reserved natural forest in Taiwan. Kenting National Park covers a total area of 33,268 hectares of land and maritime environments. It is located in south of the tropical region of Taiwan where palm tree, sugar cane and surfing beach are part of the scene. It's an excellent place for swim, surf, and dive. Other sightseeing will be visited today are the southernmost tip of Taiwan, “Maopitou" (named after the shape of cat-nose-like rock). The coast reforms which strongly affected by wave erosions, efflorescence, and salt-soaking. The natural landscape like wave erosion caves, ditches, and pillars are amazing, sea view here is attractive and very enjoyable. The Oluanpi Light House will also be visited (it is the world's first military equipped light house). In the afternoon, we will visit the orchid garden at Clone International Biotech Co.Ltd. Then drive to Kaohsiung (2nd largest city of Taiwan) and visit the Liuho Night Market to taste the Taiwanese desserts and snacks. You can then visit the famous "Love River” which is now renowned for its cafe culture and night tour which are popular among local couples for a romantic night. The 2013 Kaohsiung Lantern Festival was held at Love River. Tour guide will advise whether you are able to enjoy the romantic water lantern event at Love River this year.

Day 7 - Kaohsiung / Alishan / Chiayi (B/L/D)
13Mar2015 (Fri): - After breakfast, you will depart for the "Eight Wonders of Taiwan- Alishan", which is located at the end of the Alishan Forest Railway. If the weather permits, you will be able to see the external sea of clouds and sunrise on Jhushan after an early morning walk through spectacular landscapes of valleys and trails. Sightseeing around the Alishan National Scenic Area including: Cherry Blossom (Season: Mar-Apr), Zhaoping Park, Sochun Temple, Old Alishan Tree Site...just to name a few. The enchanting Sisters Ponds are two small pools (one with a wooden bridge and pavilion) named for two lovelorn aborigine sisters who drowned themselves there. Another attraction is the Three-Generation Trees - one growing out of another, and a third from the second.  After the experience at Alishan, you will be transferred to have a taste of the Alishan high mountain tea at the tea farmer's place. Dinner will be served at the only restaurant in Taiwan that performs ' Taiwanese Eight Gods Dance' while you enjoy your gourmet dinner.

Day 8 - Chiayi / Tainan / TIOS / Taichung (B)
14Mar2015 (Sat): - Today, is the highlight of the tour, attending the Taiwan International Orchid Show (TIOS) in Taiwan Orchid Plantation (a modern 143 hectares of orchid R&D centre located in Houpi Township, a fertile area southwest of Taiwan). You will have whole day to explore at the show for a wonderful display of orchids from many horticultural companies with hi-tech biotech facilities. Taiwan is known as the Kingdom of Orchids, but particularly for its magnificent Phalaenopsis orchids. Besides this some other varieties include Cattleyas, Vandas, Dendrobiums, Paphiopedilums, Phragmipediums, Odontoglossums and Cymbidiums, just to name a few. Orchid exports account more than 70% of all of Taiwan's horticultural exports. Taiwan supplies over 50% of the world's orchids and more than 80% of Butterfly Orchids imported in the USA are from Taiwan. The Taiwan International Orchids Show is ranked among the top three professional orchid shows in the world. This prestigious show not only offers a platform for orchids related industries and academic exchanges, but also boosts the knowledge and quality of life of its citizens. The Taiwan International Orchid Show (TIOS) will include orchid competitions, international symposiums, business meetings and social functions for those interested in orchid. More than 600,000 visitors attended the 2014 TIOS. Several thousands of visitors from professional growers to serious hobbyists come for the blooming event every year. This afternoon, we will drive to Taichung City, where the 2015 Taiwan Lantern Festival for the Year of Goat will be held at. The Lantern Festival will last for 17 days from 27th February 2015 to 15th March 2015. You can try varieties of Taiwanese food at the Taichung Lantern Festival for dinner.

Day 9 - Taichung / Sun Moon Lake (B/L/D)
15Mar2015 (Sun): - After breakfast, depart to Sun Moon Lake and Formosan Aboriginal Cultural Village. You will enjoy indigenous tribe shows and beautiful garden of the theme park. Lunch will be held inside the theme park.  Hotel check-in in the afternoon. Sun Moon Lake is Taiwan's largest lake with the east side shaped like "Sun", and West side shaped like "Moon", hence the name "Sun Moon Lake". The Sun Moon Lake, located in the middle of Taiwan, with an elevation of 748 meters above sea level. The most famous sights around Sun Moon Lake are the Te Hua House, Kuang Hua Island, the Xuanzang Temple, the Ci En Pagoda, and the Wen Wu Temple. Fist stop will be Xuanzang Temple. Monk Xuanzang was the Holy Monk in the Tang dynasty. There is a bell in front of the main gate of the Xuanzang Temple. The bell is called “wake up bell”. If you prefer quiet atmosphere, those temples are the best places for you. The Ita Thao Clan is the earliest clan that lived in the Sun Moon Lake region. The Harvest Festival, Sowing Festival and their special handicraft fair every year has helped to preserve the particular culture of the Sun Moon Lake region. The cherry blossom season in Taiwan is a sight to behold, and the Sun Moon Lake is one of the most romantic spot to enjoy the beauty of the seasonal colors.

Day 10 - Sun Moon Lake / Puli / Taipei (B/L/D)
16Mar2015 (Mon): - After breakfast, we will travel around Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area by coach. Wenwu Temple (Literature Warrior Temple) dedicated to Confucius as Master of Pen and to Kuan Ti as Master of Sword. People pray the Civil Saint of Confucius, the Military Saint of Guangong, and the Established God of two temples at the Wenwu Temple. The temple is popular among students. Shueishe Wharf is the location of the famous scenic commerce street in Sun Moon Lake. There is a vast, unlimited view when looking south toward Sun Moon Lake’s bay. This is the entrance and departure point for the Shuishe Area and the Hanbi Peninsula. Lunch will be Shaoxing cuisine at local restaurant. After lunch, we will drive to Puli, which is at the center of Taiwan. The most famous tourist spot in Puli is Puli Brewery Factory. Due to the warm weather and sweet, clear water that the Puli area of central Taiwan enjoys, the Puli Brewery Factory has come to be known for producing excellent quality Shaoxing (Shaohsing) Wine featuring a bright yellow appearance and a vigorous fragrance.Puli Brewery Factory is devoted to establishing the landmark feature of Puli as the Hometown of Shaoxing (Shaohsing) Wine. Aside from actively promoting the culture of Shaoxing (Shaohsing) Wine, there are also putting more efforts in preserving the history of the winery, it is the first Wine Culture Museum in Taiwan. Later this afternoon, we will drive back to Taipei.

Day 11 - Taipei / Osaka, Japan / Osaka Castle Park / Shinsaibashi (B/L/D)

17Mar 2015: After breakfast, you will be transferred to TPE Intl Airport for CI156 departing at 08:30 for Osaka, Japan. After Lunch on board, you will be taken to the Osaka Castle. Osaka Castle was built in 1583, with a five-layer Dijon as its core, on a lawn park that stretches for about 60,000 square meters. Osaka's north gate, Umeda, has a gigantic stretch of underground mall that houses many restaurants, fashion and sundry goods stores. In contrast to Kita with Umeda as its core, Minami is an area with core cities Namba, a popular business and shopping district, and Dotonbori with many restaurants on both sides of Dontonbori-gawa River. In recent years, the development of Osaka's new showplace, the waterfront, is taking place. Tenpo-zan Harbor Village, which has 112 meter-high ferries-wheel, shopping mall and Suntory Museum, a complex of culture facilities, and ATC (Asia-Pacific Trade Centre), Japan's largest outlet mall, are also poplar. We will visit the largest shopping district in Osaka, Sinsaibasi, where many boutiques and specialty shops are gathered. The Shinsaibashi has developed from the arcaded streets called Sinsaibashi Shopping Street. This district has a row of large size department stores and reasonably priced shops. The Suomachi-suji Street offers an elegant atmosphere with stone paved sidewalks with British style street-lamps and buildings. The area is nicknamed European Village. The Western area of Sinsaibasi is nicknamed American Village and its symbol is the walls painted with unique illustrations.

Day 12 - Kyoto / Romantic Train / Arashiyama Togetsukyo Bridge (B/L/D)

18Mar 2015: After breakfast, we will depart to Arashiyama, a pleasant, touristy district in the western outskirts of Kyoto and enjoy the Sagano Romantic Train ride. Its charming, old fashioned trains wind the way through the mountains at a relatively slow pace, giving passengers a pleasant view of the scenery as they travel through the forested ravine. Then we will go to the Togetsukyo Bridge (“Moon Crossing Bridge”), which is Arashiyama’s most iconic landmark. The bridge looks particularly attractive in combination with the forested mountainside in the background. A riverside park with dozens of cherry trees is located just adjacent to the bridge.

Day 13
 - Kinkakuji / Kiyomizu Temple / Nara / Toudaiji Temple / Biwako (B/L/D)

19Mar 2015: After breakfast, we will depart Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion Temple), which is officially called Rokuonji (Deer Garden Temple). Belonging to the Rinzai-Shokokuji sect, this temple stands in a scenic area at the foot of the northern mountain of the mountain range extending in a northwestern direction in Kyoto's basin with Mt. Kinugasa to the west and the left Daimonji mountain in the back. Kiyomizu Temple, famous for the expression "the stage at Kiyomizu," was opened in 778 by the monk Jonin who was visiting this region. Since the old days, the temple has been known for its beautiful cherry blossoms and crimson foliage. It is illuminated during the seasons of spring and autumn, allowing special nighttime visits. The sixteenth holy Kannon site of the 33 in western Japan, the temple is crowded all year long with many worshippers. Nara is located less than one hour from Kyoto and Osaka. Due to its past as the first permanent capital, it remains full of historic treasures, including some of Japan's oldest and largest temples. Sightseeing in includes visits to Toudaiji Temple of Daibutsu - the largest bronze Buddha structure in Japan within the serenity of Nara Deer Park. About 1700 cherry trees are planted across spacious Nara Park outnumbering the deer by around 500. One of the most pleasant hanami (viewing of cherry blossom) spots in the park is a large lawn encircled by cherry trees, a short walk southeast of Todaiji's main hall.Thereafter, transfer to Lake Biwa (Biwako), the largest lake in Japan with the size of a 670 km2. Many breathtaking views can be seen around the Lake Biwa. The "Biwako Hakkei," eight places of scenic beauty around Lake Biwa, was established to widely introduce the fine scenery around this lake.

Day 14 - Hikone Castle / Genkyu Garden / Gujyouhatiban / Shirakawago / Praying Village / Tateyama (B/L/D)

20Mar 2015: After breakfast, we will visit Hikone Castle.  Today Hikone Castle remains one of the oldest original-construction castles in Japan. The main keep of Hikone Castle was designated a National Treasure.  Located on the northeastern side of the Hikone Castle, Genkyuen (Genkyu Garden) is a former Daimyo garden made in the Chisen-kaiyu style. On a vast 28,000-square-meter land, it was built based on the concept of replacing China's Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers with Eight Views of Omi. Using the Hikone Castle as Shakkei (borrowed landscape), beautiful seasonal views can be enjoyed such as cherry blossoms in spring, irises and lotuses in summer, and crimson foliage in autumn. Gujyouhatiban (Gujo Hachiman) is a riverside town in Gifu Prefecture, known for its pristine waterways and its distinctive summer dance festival. The town was founded in the 16th century following the construction of Hachiman Castle. We then travel to Shirakawago, a small village that is world heritage listed. It is located in the mountains beside a prestine river. You will see the thatched roofed village by foot nad local traditional Japanese ricepaper workshop. It is also where the Praying Village is located. These villages are famous for traditional home-zukuri gassho. Model-zukuri Gassho house, or “construction praying hands” is characterized by a sloping roof form and symbolizes the hands of people who are praying. The design of this house is very strong and has a unique roof material that maintains the robustness of the building because this village will be covered with a very thick snow in winter. Home village of Shirakawa-go is very large, with 3 to 4 levels below the roof is very low, so a place big enough for one family. A traditional home in Shirakawa-go called Gassho-zukuri. Overnight stay at Takayama.

Day 15 - Jinya Morning Market / Old Town / Nagoya / Nagoya Castle / Hamanakako (B/L/D)

21Mar 2015: This morning we will visit the Takayama Jinya Morning Market, where most stands sell local crafts and farm products such as vegetables, pickles and flowers. We will proceed to the Old Town to see the historical streets of the area. The Shikinomichi ("Path of Four Seasons") along Nagoya's Yamazaki River is justifiably designated as one of Japan's 100 best cherry blossom spots. The river is lined by hundreds of cherry trees for nearly a kilometer. Many somei yoshino trees, several weeping cherry trees and small numbers of less commonly seen cherry tree varieties are planted around the pleasant park and along the moats of Nagoya Castle. Overnight stay at Hamanakako.

Day 16 - Hamanakako / Hakone / Asinoko Curise / Owakutani / Mt Fuji / Osinohakkai / Kawagutiko (B/L/D)

22Mar 2015: After breakfast, we will travel to Hakone, has the panoramic view of the ultimate Japan symbol - Mt. FujiHakone has been famous for hot spring since 1590. Asinoko Pirate-ship cruise is famous for visitors to tour around the lake area. Owakutani is the area around a crater created during the last eruption of Mount Hakone some 3000 years ago. Today, much of the area is an active volcanic zone where sulfurous fumes, hot springs and hot rivers can be experienced. A short walking trail (about ten minutes one way) leads from the ropeway station into the volcanic zone to a number of steam vents and bubbling pools. Here you can purchase eggs, cooked in the naturally hot water, whose shells are blackened by the sulfur and which are said to prolong one's life by seven years.  Oshino Hakkai is the name given to the 8 ponds filled with melted snow water that taken more than 80 years to filter through the underground layers of Mt. Fuji. People have valued this water, which they call 'sacred water'. Not only do these ponds boast fine-quality water, but they harmonize wonderfully with the surrounding rustic scenery, and the water of Oshino Hakkai is ranked among the best-quality waters of Japan. Cherry Blossom Trees along the northern shores of Lake Kawagutiko provide the magnificent sight of Mt Fuji in combination with the lake and cherry blossoms. Two of the best spots are the lakeside promenade around the Kawagutiko Music Forest and the small Ubuyagasaki peninsula next to the Kawagutiko Ohashi Bridge. Tonight you will be stay at a hot spring hotel in the Mt Fuji area. Soaking in a hot spring is one of the most enjoyable ways to initiate deep healing and rejuvenation of body, mind and spirit.

Day 17 -  Kawagutiko / Meiji Shrine / Tokyo Metro Government Office / Asakusa Kanonji Temple / Sumida River Cruise / Odaiba (B/L/D)

23Mar 2015: After breakfast, we will drive to Tokyo city, where the Meji Shrine and Asakusa will be visited. Then we will visit Asakusa Kannon and Nakamise Shopping Street. There are 400 cherry blossom trees planted on both sides of the river. Then enjoy a Sumida River cruise, a forty minute boat ride from Asakusa to Hinode Pier on Tokyo Bay. Late in the afternoon we will visit the famous Bay of Tokyo – Odaiba.

Day 18 - Tokyo City Tour / Tokyo Narita Airport / Via Taipei Back to Australia (B)
24Mar 2015: After breakfast, you will have Taokyo City Tour (or leisure time to explore the vibrant city of Tokyo). Tokyo is a shopaholic’s heaven. You can find all kinds of Japanese things at one shopping district. Roppongi is famous as to the rich Roppongi Hills area and an active nightclubs scene. Many foreign embassies are located in Roppongi, and the nightlife is popular with locals and foreigners alike. Midtown Tower is a mixture of shopping centre and office buildings in a complex in Roppongi area, which also has Tokyo's tallest office building. Almost every locality in Japan has its own variation of ramen, from the tonkotsu (pork bone broth) ramen of Kyushu to the miso ramen of Hokkaido. You will have the opportunity to taste Tokyo's famous ramen at your own expense for lunch today. You can go to Akihabara (famous for electrical, computers and cameras). The Imperial Palace is the residence of the Emperor, and while in the middle of the city, maintains an environment of abundant greenery. The Edo Shogunate’s Edo Castle was made the Emperor’s residence in 1868, when the Emperor Meiji moved from Kyoto. In 1948 the old name was abolished and it began to be referred to as the Imperial Palace. About 16:00PM in the afternoon, you will be transferred to the Narita Airport for flight (CI17 18:50-21:50 NRT-TPE & CI51 23:00-11:20 TPE-SYD) back to Australia via Taipei.

25Mar 2015:  The flight will arrive Sydney approximately at 11:20AM.
