Busan Port in Korea to be Expanded

South Korea's Busan cruise port is to undergo a major expansion to improve facilities and enable it to attract larger vessels.

Already the largest of its kind in Northeast Asia, the port's 360m long quay at the Yeongdo Cruise Pier will be extended to 435m to handle cruise ships of up to 200,000 tonnes.

The work is expected to be completed by 2018.

In September Busan officially opens a separate cruise terminal which can accommodate cruise ships of up to 130,000 tonnes.

"Cruise markets have traditionally focused on the Mediterranean, Europe, and the Caribbean but we are now seeing passengers developing a taste for Northeast Asia," said Busan Port Authority president Lim Ki-tack.

The Busan Port Authority forecasts 280,000 cruise ship passengers from 135 port calls during 2015, Lim said.
